Holiday Entertainment

Holiday entertainment far exceeding that of previous years was enjoyed by visitors and local residents throughout the holiday period. Mainly responsible were the Waikanae Carnival Committee, which ran nightly stage shows, and Greater Gisborne, some of whose events are pictured on these pages.

The Friday night street show, which operated from a truck at the Gladstone Road-Bright Street intersection, attracted a large crowd. A continuous programme included the Crescendos Dance Band, teenage singer Julie Nelson, quiz shows, community singing, and Gisborne's Houdini, "Indana", who escaped from a strait-jacket while suspended from a crane.
