Steeplechase Crash

In the first race of the second day at Makaraka, the Hikurangi Hack Hurdles, Chevalier fell at the last fence and his rider, R. B. Shields, was injured. Our automatic camera was trained on this hurdle when the accident happened, and recorded a series of six pictures in brief interval while the field passed. With only a short distance to go to the finish, Galileo was in the lead, and Chevalier and French Boy were a couple of lengths back, coming over the hurdle side by side, when they both tipped the obstacle and stumbled. French Boy recovered to come in fourth. Glen Albyn was second, and Super Tone third.
