I'm usually a very organised person at Christmas time. Presents are purchased and wrapped prior to the end of November (had to be re-wrapped one year as the paper had faded, much to the delight of some disorganised friends) and my contributions towards the family Christmas dinner are well under way. Maybe it was the heat, or the busy days at the Photo News in its new premises, but this year's festivities sort of "snuck up" on me and my shopping took place in the week leading up to Christmas. What a nightmare! The whole of Gisborne decided to shop that week. Cars were banked up from the Peel St. lights to Grey St. and dust swirled from the old Regent demolition site. You can imagine the relief when my brother's instructions for our Christmas at Waimarama Beach were to "bring enough lemons for the fish". With perfect weather, good company, crayfish and champagne, it turned out to be a memorable occasion. Another event I'll always remember, was New Year at the Town Clock. In true community spirit, Radio 2ZG's Stuart Dwight entertained a well-behaved crowd of several thousand who gathered to ring in the new year with singing, dancing and plenty of laughter. Took me back to the days when I was a teenager and restored my faith in the young generation who have decided there's nothing wrong with some good old-fashioned tradition. A very happy and healthy 1995 to you all.
