On October 8th the eyes of the nation will focus once again on Gisborne. Many of us will remember the magnificent festivities that marked the 200th celebrations of Captain James Cook RNs first landing in New Zealand. 1994 sees the 225th anniversary of that day in history and reiterates the importance of Cook's landing site being declared a National Historic Reserve in 1990, the first on the New Zealand mainland. It seems appropriate then, that this year has seen its fair share of national tournaments in this area of national significance. Gisborne recently hosted the NZ Netball under 21 and under 19 Championships followed by the National under 14 Premier Division Soccer tournament, both of which are covered in this magazine. We have national coaches in our midst, outstanding NZ representatives in many sports and arts and business people who have paved the way nationally putting us on the map with their business acumen and unique creativity. With the year 2000 approaching, it seems everyone wants a share of the action on the Coast. We've come a long way in 225 years.
