Four-year-old Dean Kelling, son of Mr and Mrs A. R. Kelling, 17 Pare Street, Wainui, was judged "Master Opotiki" at the Tirohanga Beach New Year carnival contest run in conjunction with the "Miss Opotiki" contest. A former baby competition winner in Gisborne, Dean won the event from 45 entrants.

A 16-year-old New South Wales girl, Morrelle Tacon, arrived at Darton Field recently, for two weeks stay in Gisborne under a Lions' Club student exchange scheme between the Gisborne and Cardiff clubs. At the airport were, from left: the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, Morrelle, Susan Loffler, Bill Paku (chairman Youth Exchange Committee), Mrs G. H. Loffler (hostess), Mr Paddy Pilbrow (president Lions Club), and Anne Loffler.

Keen to make a career as a commercial pilot, 12-year-old Ted Harper, son of Mr and Mrs I. S. Harper, 129 Chalmers Road, has made 11 flights with Mr Bob Webb, Gisborne Aero Club instructor, observing and learning for the day he becomes 16 and will be able to sit his private pilot license.

Unlike most beauty contests the recent "Miss Gisborne" quest was open to all-comers, married women included. Gisborne housewife Mrs Jocelyn Screech took advantage of the opportunity, to her advantage when the judges announced their decision. She is pictured with her 22-months son Darryn and husband Brian.
